About Us
We are an Association acting on behalf of the Residents of Merrymeet and Pengover, an area including not only the two villages but also neighbouring farms and dispersed residences. The Association came into existence one could say almost by coincidence. In 1999 three persons all involved in the Merrymeet Neighbourhood Watch scheme talked about whether something should be done to celebrate the forthcoming Millennium. One of them put an announcement in The Cornish Times asking for those interested to make contact. Only one reply was received, but it was decided to proceed anyway. Various possibilities were looked at and preliminary proposals drawn up, following which a village meeting was called to discuss any proposed further activities. There was a good attendance. The proposals were put forward and generally agreed. A committee was formed. Someone suggested that instead of a committee just for the Millennium, why not let this same committee act for the village on other matters as well. In effect, form a Residents' Association. This was duly proposed, seconded and passed. Once the Millennium festivities were over and which were very successful, the committee concentrated on the activities of what was at that time called The Merrymeet Residents' Association.
From the start, because of its close vicinity, the Association had always included the residents of Pengover in its activities and was well supported by them. Within a year or so, it was proposed and carried by the committee that we should change the title to become The Merrymeet and Pengover Residents' Association. For a short period recently, we changed the name Pengover to Pengover Green.. However, we apply the name ‘Merrymeet’ to the village itself and also to its surrounding area, whereas the name ‘Pengover Green’ is used for its village but ‘Pengover’ used for the village plus its surrounding area.
